The subtle change in understanding is, Conservatives believe you are the cause of everything that happens to you and not being harmed means they alone protected themselves and must have moral superiority

Say what you will about liberals, they have no problem calling out their leaders' mistakes and holding them accountable. I'm so frustrated hearing trump's people ignore his failures and try to convince me "well, actually . . ."
