Short answer is no. Longer answer: it’s complex in that our system is very different but also we get a lot of content from the US. Also, while we don’t have a Fox News (although I think you can pay for it) more people are getting their news online and no longer trust mainstream news.

We have a Canadian Broadcast Corporation which is like the BBC in the UK. However, the right in Canada does not like it and the Conservatives have said that they will basically get rid of it when they are next in power, likely next year.

Also, that party and its forebears have been chipping away at the fundamentals of the CBC at least since BM the PM in the 1980s. (And of course, every government accuses it of an anti-gov slant.)

One thing to note here is that people are quite likely to try to claim this is somehow due to the Internet. Yet it’s the basic and structural weakness of media (especially news) in Canada that is the actual problem, and the Kent Commission came out in 1980 (when the Internet arguably didn’t exist).

Thank you for this post. I trust your opinion and the Tyee in their integrity. Why does this never reach the general public? The propaganda only works well because it is dismissed by the mainstream media.
