NEW Split Ticket piece in the Washington Post: Donald Trump has turned the economy into a liability, through a series of entirely self-inflicted wounds (and thanks, in no small part, to his tariff policy). Gift link: wapo.st/4igCoCn

Breaking News: Harvard rejected the Trump administration’s demands, including that it submit to monitoring and reduce the power of faculty and students.

Harvard does what should be expected of an institution with their wealth and power. So many in a similar position choose the coward's path.

Look who's on Bluesky now!

Letter from Dem Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD) requesting a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele To discuss MD father Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return "If Kilmar is not home by midweek – I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release."

Even by the most expansively limp definition of “facilitate” Trump admin is flagrantly defying the Supreme Court by aggressively obstructing the return of a lawlessly kidnapped and deported man.

So, if I understand correctly, the President of the United States is saying that the Supreme Court of the United States consists of nine “sick people,” including three whom he appointed. apple.news/AMHDqIFcpRxi...

Go Harvard! Finally a big Institution standing up!

Four R senators and four R House members could announce they're caucusing with the Dems for now, and will vote for Schumer for Majority Leader and Jeffries for Speaker, because the threat to the rule of law is dire. Meanwhile, they'll work with Democrats to construct guardrails against dictatorship.

BREAKING NEWS

BREAKING: On Friday, the federal government issued new demands of Harvard University. The university's lawyers just responded: back off.

While this UMass poll doesn't directly ask this, we now have the first hint that if people knew then what they know now, @kamalaharris.com may well have been elected President. 19% of Trump voters have concerns about having voted for Trump. Only 4% of Harris voters say this about their votes.

We just crossed the penultimate red line. www.thebulwark.com/p/what-is-jo...

And Harvard has Robert Hur representing them. Smart move.

Harvard responds to the Trump administration: "The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government.. . . ." www.harvard.edu/research-fun...

Watching this Trump-Bukele meeting with chime-ins from Miller, Bondi and Rubio. There's just no question about the game they're playing. A stream of lies and escalations and absolute nonsense that any sane person can see through instantly. Astonishing that so many don't.

The Ohio State University and its president, Ted Carter, now have less than two hours to back out of this. Are they really going to go along with this now? Not that they should have before this. www.youtube.com/live/dad3GCg...

Foreign concentration camps for American citizens.

The Trump administration is moving quickly to dramatically expand the nation’s capacity for detaining immigrants who do not have legal authorization to be in the U.S. The administration has largely turned to the for-profit, private prison industry. buff.ly/vJKQS1a

NEW: An interview with Neera Tanden @neeratanden.bsky.social on — among other things — what it means for Democrats to stand up and fight. "I think there is a big dividing line between people who think we're dealing with normal politics and people who think we're dealing with existential insanity."

Watching Trump and Bukele in the Oval Office just now made me feel physically ill.

My stomach has been hurting over this since last night and I want to make clear what a big red line crossed this is.

If I was a political science department that produced one of these authoritarians in the Oval Office today & had hired him back as a scholar in residence in my department I would have spoken out against his authoritarianism at some point.

My first paper is out! Loved working on this.

Trump speaks on disappearing U.S. citizens to El Salvador: “I’m all for it”

The president told a Central American dictator to build five more massive slave labor camps to hold US citizens.

I don't use "impeachment" lightly. Aside from Trump, Marco Rubio **PIPED UP** to endorse flouting a court order, and said the only person who can make foreign policy is the president, which is incorrect in more ways than he can count. High crimes, dereliction of duty, constitutionally illiterate.

I feel like “President of the United States suggests he would deport American citizens to prisons in El Salvador” should be fairly big news

Donilon and Ricchetti were just sleepwalking us all into this. No urgency from either of them to help prevent this. @kamalaharris.com did all she could to prevent this. But it was impossible by the late date at which she took over the campaign.

If only there was a major national newspaper who's opinion section was recently reoriented to "protecting free market economic principles" that could criticize this.

It's true. I watched the video. This is an incredibly important news story.

Here's Trump saying to Bukele that "homegrown criminals are next" and talking about how El Salvador will need to build "about five more places."

Serious point: This might be the most interventionist American government in my lifetime. The price of just about every good reflects the good thinking of the Commissars in Washington DC implementing their 5-year plan for National Greatness, rather than market forces.

Ohio State's President is going to be appearing with Trump & Vance at the White House on the same day this is happening. Mind-boggling that OSU's Ted Carter is continuing with that appearance at a time when 11 of his own students have had their visas revoked. A shameful day for OSU.

Every now and then I think about how none of this would have happened if not for McGovern-Fraser. It's one of the great ironies of all time that perhaps the most liberal presidential nominee ever, George McGovern, inadvertently ended up providing a pathway for such illiberalism.
