Latest register of MPs' interests shows Nigel Farage was paid £91,200 for four hours' work promoting gold bullion, and had £40,000-plus in US travel expenses paid for by rich friends.

It's actually older than this. William Rees-Mogg wanted to bring back the gold standard.

I think it's linked to a distrust of the abstraction which is inherent in unbacked money and a belief in a natural hierarchy of value.

A lot of these hard right types still don’t accept fiat currency as “real”, and view gold as the genuine store of value. It’s insane, but it’s been a major talking point of libertarian right wingers for decades, which has been adopted by osmosis by the broader far right

Lots of US terminally online “meme” conservatives (the antecedent to the groyper), were Ron Paul supporters in 2012, and a major part of his platform was a return to the gold standard. I suspect European right wingers got the gold idea, as they do most of their ideas, from the American hard right
