Honestly I don't see it as much of a loss. Skype was never the same past 2014 for me. It just felt cold and lifeless compared to how bright and enjoyable it was growing up.
sharing my cringe little ocs and rping with my other 10 year old online friends… those were the days man 😔 with skype and drawcast gone there’s nothing left
microsoft paid 8.5 billion for it and ran it for 14 years at what can only be huge financial loss. microsoft's share price grew by more than a factor of 10 bc that makes sense
Can't say I'm gonna miss it because it was always kinda a mess but it still really shows how badly Microsoft botched it. They had the money to keep people from leaving for Discord and/or WhatsApp
I still can't believe Skype completely ghosted us during the whole pandemic. That was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reach the entire world and they missed it entirely.
I dont think so, Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 to replace MSN. Then Skype has just slowly been losing out to Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger/Facetime for the regular audience and Discord for the gamers. I think they realised it was a losing battle a while ago. Going all in on Teams for businesses
I realize now that I only learned of its existence like 3-4 years into its life - around 2006-07 - and even then the technology seemed miraculous. You could use your PC... as a PHONE?! Not just between PCs, but actually call people on their Nokias and shit?? Insane.
I loved Skype because it allowed me to face time with my parents who were not really into technology. We are now on Microsoft teams and my mom is loving it.
How they lost the lead during the pandemic needs to be studied. They were way out in front on the video chat platform but Zoom and Teams came from nowhere it seems!
Say what you will, but Skype was the goat at some point for video/audio calls. It was far from perfect but did the job. Can't say I'm sad to see it go as I haven't used it in years, but I'll forever be grateful for it. Hopefully those that have lost their jobs if there were any, are relocated.
I will forever link #Skype to the unidentified hacker who invaded my imac in 2008. Maybe they will release a list of male users names? He is on it and he’s an #abuser. The 2008 user list must be fairly small and made up of mostly tech people?
Skype was the Internet Explorer of video call apps/programs.
Its camera quality was always shit, no matter how good your internet was. It failed to keep up with modern connection speeds, which resulted in people jumping ship to alternatives like Discord and Zoom.
During Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, Skype was a lifeline for me, helping me to stay in contact with my younger siblings! A real shame that Skype has been shut down, a real, real Pity!
Highly recommend going to settings in your computer/phone and turning it off if this is a problem you have. I am an artist and like to use my computer for referencing, and eventually got so annoyed my computer went to sleep on me I shut it off.
It wont happen.
Twitter is absolute trash and there's great alternative to it with sites like this, and yet people still refuse to leave.
Discord was honestly probably one of the last times that'll happen any time soon.
Back then most people didn't see MySpace's downfall coming either.
That being said, so far I'm still comfortable with Discord and I've been using it since 2016, but I felt the same with Skype, until it got ruined later on.
Still kinda miss Skype though.
Comments
Use discord lmao
I used to use Skype with some irl friends (only one person lol)
Teams is alright though, I kinda like it.
We all have a great time with you
I guess people will flock to snapchat then which I've never used that either.
I imagine most of those contracts have migrated over to Microsoft Teams.
It's called Micrsoft Teams now
Fuck teams, fuck Lync, fuck Skype for business

I was actually the only person in my group for years who still used it.i was lucky my friends were willing to teach me how to use Discord.
I'll let myself out

It was stuck in the 2000s.
Now trying Jami (only weird problem is it doesn't stop the screen sleeping)
You can always turn it back on! ;P
IT IS NOT ME WHO DECIDES THIS BUT TIME
DISCORD WILL PERISH LIKE CLIENTS BEFORE IT
THIS IS LIFE
THIS IS DEATH
NO ONE SAID THAT
RETURN TO AOL
Also sorry if this comes off mean, but we're just shitposting/joking around.
I use discord myself, including for work.
Sorry if my wording didn't convey that
THE PROFIT, THE BEGINNING AND THE END, AOL DEMANDS IT.
(But also stop putting all your eggs in the one basket discord isn't going to last forever and you need to be ready)
So I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time until a new messenger/app pops up.
And I guess the current alternatives are maybe Telegram and Line.

Things come and go.

And that's all I meant too. I'm comfortable on discord and hope they stop accelerating their downfall but ultimately...
from one to another such as time flows
