This is what people mean when they say “write to market.” Figure out what readers are interested in reading and give that to them. It’s not some sell-out scammy mindset, it’s just about writing story shapes readers are looking for.
Also I used “story shape” on purpose. Novel forms and genre conventions are only as restrictive as the writer wants them to be. Constraint makes good art, even when it’s filthy genre art.
Honestly that’s a fool’s errand. There’s no way to find out what “people” want. Who are these “people” anyway? You’re a person. What do you want? I’d be more inclined to read that than any futile attempt on your part to determine what I want.
