In a note to colleagues, WaPo’s Ruth Marcus says she resigned from the paper after CEO Will Lewis killed a column she wrote expressing concern about the direction of the paper’s opinion section

As we destroy them, oligarchs must be made to feel regret…OBSERVABLE regret that we can savor…because they are incapable of feeling true shame, guilt or remorse. We should all want to watch them writhe and flail as they realize it was we who held their leash all along, not vice versa.
Surely they regret all the quarter billion they walked away with. Every single million that can go to fund their yachts and mansions, while they piss on the rest of society.
They were wealthy already. I’m wondering about the legacy of the paper Katharine Graham worked so hard to build. Under her and Ben Bradlee’s leadership the Post became a nationally-respected paper instead of just a local one. That’s all gone now.
And they sold out because they wanted yet more dollars to add to their dragons horde of wealth and to push them up the dollar scoreboard. Fuck them, they were always awful people.
Can everyone please write to Mackenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos’s ex, asking her to found a newspaper where press freedom and integrity are respected? Because we urgently need an alternative to the Post and the NYT!
And/or we support existing independent publications like @theguardian.com through readership and ,where we can afford to, direct personal financial contributions.
Interesting. His having a board role doesn’t present (to me anyway) as problematic since he has no ownership. GMG is 100% owned by the Scott Trust, and its governance appears solid.
Yes and his advisory role will carry weight. I urge you to (if you haven’t already) read the Substack by @carolecadwalla.bsky.social - when Guardian journos struck, the paper used AI like a digital scab to write articles ‘in the style of’ and with a byline attributed.

The Washington Post has gone down the slippery slope of censorship. It still looks like a real newspaper, but everything you read, whether it is sold as news or opinion, is adjusted to appease Trump. The purpose is not to help WaPo thrive as a news outlet, but to ingratiate Bezos to Trump.
Sad to watch the demise of WAPO, my hometown newspaper. The old bastion of journalism that published the Pentagon Papers and helped to bring down a corrupt president is no more - now just a mouthpiece for the ultra-wealthy.
It seems like every week WaPo gives me a reason to cancel my subscription, but alas I cancelled it after Bezos refused to run the Harris endorsement and they won't let me cancel it more than once.
That's when I cancelled as well. It's still good until late April, and I won't renew for any promotional rates until Bezos sells, or changes his ways of management.
Dear Mr. Bezos and Mr. Lewis, you are not the reason people read the Washington Post, your reporters, analysts and trusted opinion journalist are. If you don't want to run a newspaper that retains and attracts subscribers, please consider selling to folks that do.
Just print Jeff Bezos' daily gender-affirming stack of steroids and HGH or whatever on a sheet of paper and let that be the Washington Post, at this point.
Hopefully she joins The Contrarian where we can get a more in-depth perspective. Or perhaps The Atlantic. There are still substantive free/fair publications that can benefit from her talent
I canceled Prime, the annual fee is up for me in April. I also am never buying an ebook for my Kindle again. I'm finding another device and source (I like to buy books, so Libby isn't really an interest). I'm an avid reader so most of my $ to Amazon was in ebooks. Good riddance.
I'm looking at the Onyx Boox Go Color 7, but haven't purchased yet. I decided I'm likely to go to a color eink (would like to buy comics sometimes). Android (I know, Google, but...still can load the Kindle app for my ~300 Kindle books w/out un-DRMing).
I decided not to box myself into another proprietary system (ie Kobo) though Kobo gets good reviews from people. I'm just leery of closed sandboxes now...
And for purchasing, I'm thinking likely https://ebooks.com, for the large inventory. But haven't looked closely at the logistics yet.
I buy ebooks through Barnes & Noble (they have their own app) and Apple. I don’t know if they have audiobooks, but I’ll bet they do. You might also want to check out your local library for ebooks and audiobooks.
Yeah for a lot of people, Libby is a great option and it looks like they do audiobooks. It's a library lending app, not a buy app, but I'm a huge rereader so I like to own...people love Libby though.
A reminder. They don't give a toss about us. But their money all comes from us & government subsidies paid with our taxes. Do you understand the assignment. Don't forget Facebook & Instagram. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
Harder to tank Amazon than Tesla- but millions more of us could stop using Amazon than would ever have been in the market for a 'swasticar' and Tesla is definitely feeling our wrath. Come on peeps. I've not used Amazon this year..
My daughter, a news reporter but degreed journalist, and I often discuss pitfalls of news "reporting" and the professionalism of journalist who adhere to the journalist creed. I applaud Ms Marcus, a Journalist! Adding the creed for who may read my post and not aware. https://journalistscreed.org/eng-s.htm
After considering for some time whether to retain our household subscription solely for some of the great reporting & despite Bezos interference, we finally gave up. Thank god, Katherine Graham didn’t live to see WaPo strangled to death by Bezos. Good luck to the remaining valiant few.
I stuck around for Ruth Marcus, and for the audio on most articles (I'm visually impaired). But if Ruth Marcus is out, I am regretfully out as well. Shame how these billionaires burn down valuable assets without hesitation. American meritocracy at its best. 🇺🇲
MacKenzie Scott please buy the Star Tribune from Glen Taylor and rapidly expand it into a well-funded nationwide paper with a large prominent office in Washington D.C.
She's no lefty, either. This just shows how far RIGHT the entire US media is moving to either directly support DJT, or to avoid getting in the crosshairs of MAGA media. This should now be obvious to everyone...
We have right wing control of the US media complex. It is just a matter of degree.

Any wonder our ranking has declined steadily over the last two decades?

Slow to react much? The ones who jumped to safety left LONG AGO. Wtaf Ruth 👀 This is who Will Lewis is. Always has been.
But I've also stopped using Amazon. Bezos is poison now.
This comparison helped me decide.

You would reach more people, when you add a good description into the Alt-text field.
That is pretty easy, especially, when your image just contain text.
This way, you support visually impaired people and everyone else, who rely on a good filled Alt-text.

B) folks who have worked at any company especially a newspaper(!!) for 40 years can get fucked
