The R01 payline was under 10% last year and the NIH got nearly 4,000 high quality applications (i.e. supported by strong preliminary evidence)! These grants are incredibly competitive!

2) As academic researchers, #NIH grants are crucial to having a research job. Although researchers are hired by the institution, the institution expects researcher to obtain grants (multiple) that will actually pay their salary.

2) Researchers typically ask for lower % efforts for themselves to increase the chance of funding & to put the $$ towards supplies and personnel (I may be working 35% on it, but will only ask for 10%). One NIH grant typically provides small %'s of salary support to multiple investigators

4) There are research coordinators & assistants & statisticians who are paid entirely by #NIH grants. A pause, even if temporary, will translate into harm for the workforce. We cannot expect people to work without pay, nor in unstable environments.

5) #NIH grants come with a substantial amount of "indirect" funds for the University (i.e. $$ that funds the research infrastructure, like office of grants, biomedical library access, etc). These funds are crucial in keeping the institution functional

6) Most funded grants are multi-year & require a report on progress to justify ongoing funding. The SUBJECT MATTER IS NOT RE-QUESTIONED TO SEE IF THERE IS ALIGNMENT WITH POLITICS as the project is already ongoing!!! This is an unprecedented and asinine move.

It is amazing to hear the misconceptions about NIH grant applications. They are like a business plan: year by year descriptions of what will be done
and alternative plans described if the results are different than hypothesized. Budgets are described and justified. Technician jobs depend on them.

We all put in late nights sometimes but no one works harder than my PIs!!! And on vitally important research!

During my life I have known several people who received NIH grants. There is a great deal of upfront work and are very difficult to receive. It is a national disaster whose effects will be felt for many years.

That’s why they need to know that the future health care workforce is dependent on the funding of pre and postdoctoral fellows. There will not be medical, dental, nursing, and other providers if there are no faculty to teach the new students.

As a former NIH predoctoral fellow, I want to add that NIH grants also are written by doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows who do that work to start their careers in the scientific community. Fellowships are essential for funding students to complete their studies.

I have served as an NSF reviewer twice, and I did not know this! NSF proposals are only 15 pages, and they take an immense amount of work to review!

the research strategy is 12 pages, but there are many, many supporting documents that have to be included (i.e. statistical plans, description of organization's capabilities, each team member's qualifications, etc, etc)

Excellent explainer! I would only add that for non-biomedical research, the process is very similar for NSF, USDA, and other federal funding sources, ALL of which were halted under the same order for the same absurd reason.
