amusingly it also demands that schools annually teach children about the U.S. Constitution, the very document that specifically says the government can’t do things like “prohibiting teachers from freely choosing to use the pronouns a student requests they use”

among other very junky things about the legal writing here, it repeatedly promises to stop “gender ideology,” and it has a definitions section, which defines “discriminatory equity ideology” (I’m sure they think the forced initialism is very clever) but doesn’t define “gender ideology”

ask an actual lawyer but if I were an educator the only thing I’d be doing differently in the wake of this EO is not communicating in writing about knowledge of any student’s transition—which I hope my theoretical teacher self wouldn’t have been doing in the first place.

The trick is we often have to email students and - pronouns aside- often they go by a different name that isn’t on their school records. And sometimes it can be changed on their official school records, not sure if this only happens once parents approve. But…

It doesn’t require you to do anything differently now (it’s requesting a report from three agencies on how to condition your funding on doing things differently) but even if it did I think it would be quite hard to enforce that sort of speech restriction, especially if you have a strong union

if I were a teacher now I’d probably avoid putting anything like “so, with Sara’s transition, she can start using the girls’ room whenever she likes” in an email, but I think “you can’t call her Sara even if her parents say her name is Sara now” is totally unenforceable
