Like, I don't subscribe to the FT because I don't want to pay £69 a month for it. The trade-off I make is that I don't get to read the FT. "How dare people who work for the FT tell me about things they've written in the FT when I won't pay for it" would be a deranged statement for me to make.

Has it be widely tried before? I don't want to / can't afford to set up ongoing monthly subscriptions everywhere but in theory at least I like the idea of being able to read 1 or 2 articles each from a wide range of content-providers every week.
Greed of media owners?
