I don't like how Starmer is handling this, it feels wrong and dirty. And I’ve not held back in my criticism. However, I suspect/hope he is playing a long game. As with ww2 the red flags over the past decades have been ignored.
Neither we nor Europe have prepared properly for this situation and we all and Ukraine, etc need time. We need time to adapt, plan and build. I’m hoping that is what Starmer is trying to achieve. Playing for that time. Possibly, maybe 🤔🤷♂️
He is playing the long game. No point confronting Trump and telling him he's an arseh*le. That will just antagonise him, make the UK a target and ruin any (slim) chance of Europe playing any role in solving the Ukraine issue or saving NATO. Instead, play the diplomat, while planning for the future.
Think of the movie Dr Strangelove when the English army officer Captain Mandrake is trying to humour the lunatic American army Brigadier General Jack D Ripper from launching a nuclear strike...that's pretty much Starmer and trump right now... sadly it will end as badly as it did in the movie
He needs to do a Macron: speak to the nation.
'Given the situation it is now clear Brexit was and still is an Act of War.
We've rejoined the EU. Deal with it'. Thanks.
What was once speculative and considered as a mad conspiracy, those that viewed Brexit and Trump as one of the same and aligned with Russian interests, were part of the project fear 'nothing to see here' pushback. It was always in plain sight and evidenced.
Utter madness.
As a Canadian I couldn't disagree more. Canada has 1/10 of the population of the US. We do not have nuclear weapons and the longest unprotected border in the world. We need the allies that we have supported to be on our side. We have a long history of supporting our allies.
Trump—the walking crime scene in an orange suit—now taints Britain too?! 🇬🇧🤢 The grifter-in-chief, Putin’s pet, the wannabe dictator—and people STILL give him a platform?! HOW BLIND CAN YOU BE?! WAKE UP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! 🚨💀
What isn't being commented on anywhere, is just look at who Trump is going at first: Trudeau, Zelensky, the Germans. He's a small man and this is about personal vengeance after feeling belittled the first time. Best way is to avoid to humiliating him. You're also more likely to get what you want.
Flattery is absolutely the way to Trump's good graces. Many world leaders have exploited this. He is a very simple man with a very large ego. So now world leaders need to decide if they are going to kiss his feet or not. Submission is the only language Trump understands (Putin notwithstanding)
"At the same time, it means working to keep US links – especially military and intelligence links – strong enough to be revived more effectively after 2028, when Trump is due to step down."
I don’t want to throw cold water on you, but I believe his intention is to never step down. Here is hoping your court system can handle this test and you figure out your voting system.
True..
This America/Russia alliance has really brought Europe together.
And as comrade donald starts trade wars all over the world, many countries will form new alliances,
Probably a lot of them with China, the king of infrastructure deals.
In the unlikely event that USA has free elections in 4 year's time, Europe will no longer be playing the side-kick role. It needs to step up into the role of world power as the last bastion of liberal democracy. We can only hope that Starmer's calm front belies an acceptance of the new challenge.
As long as Trump is in power, Europe will never be able to rest assured that the United States will rally to Europe's side in a disaster. Americans cannot even be sure that Trump will help them unless they are part of the wealthy sector!
He won’t help Europe. He’s already helping Russia achieve its goals in Ukraine and trying to profit from it. He’d send in troops and arms against Europe if there’s something in it for him. He’s already trying not to help Americans. He’d send in the troops against us too if we get loud enough.
Not only Trump’s US but any algorithm where he has even a modicum of influence, long after his term has ended. His methods of smashing the government just because he doesn’t like it is no way to run a company, let alone a country. Gaslighting the people is his #1 tactic for justifying this insanity.
And having just returned from his asskissing American tour, what a waste of a good pucker.
Canada could use a little support Britain, you know an actual commonwealth partner🤨
Any person or publication that implies Trump will willingly give up power in 4 years (much less enable free and fair elections EVER) is part of the gaslighting.
Starmer will still be in office post Trump - even if that is still a MAGA US the world will be very different - keeping a relationship open is good politics. If US throws us under a bus that will be their call…
If this is Starmer at his best, I’d hate to see him at his worst. Sycophant ring-kisser/brown-noser threw Canada (a fellow Commonwealth country) under the bus without even blinking. Every time I see his pasty mug, I wanna 🤢🤮
If I were Europe, I'd be working to cut the US out of everything. We have proven we are unstable, a horrible ally who cannot be trusted with the code to open the bathroom let alone anything important. Open up new trade partners and dump all US products in the trash.
Why should he? I'm in the US, and I can see how Trump's policies are erratic, chaotic, and unhinged. Is it in the interest of any of our allies to never know where they stand?
Perhaps Starmer could spare a thought or two for Canada, his Commonwealth partner, instead of feting Emperor Cheeto. Our Canadian sons and fathers shed their blood, lost their lives to fight for King and Country. No State Dinner for Trump!
Trump does not always treat his allies well. He lacks a diplomatic temperament and has a bullying nature. He can behave erratically and not, at times, honor his commitments.
Hopefully, Starmer understands that there's no future with the US but is buying time for the UK and Europe to get their ducks in order. A longer, softer break is better than a sudden, hard one.
Absolutely. The U.S. regime is supporting authoritarianism and is not trustworthy. Starmer must meet the moment, like new German leader Merz and invest in rearming and social infrastructure. He has an opportunity to push to rejoin the EU single market and customs union, to help meet those costs.
You’re assuming fat boy steps down in 4 years and he won’t, he’s already making moves to get the Supreme Court to rule that it’s 2 consecutive terms not 2 in total. We’ll be fighting the yanks eventually, they continue down this road to fascism it’s inevitable
It's time for all Europeans and Brits to accept this and to act in solidarity. Strengthening Europe isn't just for governments. Cancel US subscriptions, shift spending to European-made products, and support local businesses. #BoycottUSA #Buy-European-Made.eu

Utter madness.
Canada can deal with that themselves.....no need for PM of UK to comment
Greenland.....maybe
they have elections coming up that Musk can try and rig
You really are committed to excusing the spineless Starmer.
Starmer did the right thing and let Canada deal with it
Canadian government is doing a good job dealing with Trump
However as already stated:
“You really are committed to excusing the spineless Starmer.”
So you’ll keep excusing his grovelling to Fascism.

only inside the US does it appear "normal"
"Due to step down" is an amazing phrase there.
This America/Russia alliance has really brought Europe together.

Learn from this wisdom
Starmer is just this era’s Neville Chamberlain (just even more pathetic and grovelling).
It’s called sweeping Trumps chimney.

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY MIDTERM ELECTIONS
it will take a generation but it MUST result in rebuilt arms industry devoid of US involvement
Don't fall into the "we need US tech" trap All wars are never ended with old tech..new tech always emer6
US is becoming dangerous and I hope Starmer is being smart about this.
Canada could use a little support Britain, you know an actual commonwealth partner🤨

Because Starmer is an idiot.
[sarcasm]

His repeated appeasement of Trump was always delusional nonsense.
Probably because Starmer is trying to cover up how he sold the UK out to the US (unlike Macron with France).
