Ever notice how it’s the HUGE pickup truck parked right in front of the building entrance, while the older couple with creaky knees have to much further away to get to the door?
Perception of safety is a major factor driving the arms race. I've been an MX-5 enjoyer for over 20 years; in the innocent, halcyon days of the mid-00's, any sense of danger came from how I chose to operate my vehicle. It now feels like I could be flattened by cars whose wheels are above my eyeline.
The Big Three (US) have stepped away from the small car market, but when larger vehicles become too expensive for the average buyer, demand for smaller cars will rise again—catching them off guard thereby benefitting foreign suppliers.
I hate how owners of those supersized cars think they own the road. I have to brake check them because they like to tailgate people doing the speed limit. Screw them.
I remember as a kid my dad having an 8 seater Peugeot and we still took a second car for all the luggage on family holidays - 2 adults 4 kids - to the south coast.
What I have noticed is that car park spaces have got smaller to get more spaces on the carpark
We have a RAV4. It is the only Toyota that has enough leg room for anyone over the he of 4 years old sitting in the back (we have a 15 year old and a 20 year) plus - travelling as a family of four with two dogs and luggage.
Actually, at 6'2 the cars that have fit me best were my VW Golf and my current Audi A3. Germans are, on average, taller than Americans so the cars are, on average, made for taller people
Clearly not true unless you are a family of giants. Smaller vehicles may not be as roomy but to say you cannot have adults in the back is simply incorrect. I know plenty of families who make do with Polos and the like.
I’m 5’3” and I still don’t have room for my knees in the back seat most modern cars. Technically you can have adults in the back but “not be as roomy” is a generous description of being squeezed in like sardines. Add two dogs and luggage and there is simply NOT room.
Before we move to smaller cars, someone would need to repair the streets to a decent condition. Biden was working on that, but I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed for now.
They tap your front & back end scratching up your car trying to fit into a parking spot that they know they’re to damn big to park in. They should park them in parking garages.
If you have a large family, maybe. That is not what I see out there. Mostly single drivers double parking their behemoths, hogging the roads at high speed and little old ladies having trouble backing out of a parking lot squeeze. Gas guzzling nuisances.
Americans in jeopardy from huge autos? More than 1m cars too big for parking spaces bought in the UK each year? Owners feel better about their insecurities? Rather, "f*** you" by the rich to the rest. Starmer alternative to Trump? Ban such tanks from our roads. For safety, not God's love.
I'll (in Ireland) move to a smaller car when speed limits are drastically reduced, drunk/drug driving is properly punished and roads are kept in a half decent state. The biggest batrier to buying a smaller car, for me, is safety.
Fix the regulation structure for 'small trucks' and this problem goes away. If 'small trucks' (small in comparison to lorries) pickups and SUVs were regulated like actual cars were then they'd cost 3 times as much. Those F-150s and Escalades should be Porsche money.
Also in the u.k we have a big pot hole problem but this seems to be blamed on councils, which in some part it is , but all cars are bigger and heavier than even 10 years ago and this in it self leads to more damage being done to the roads, again making them more unsafe.
This has driven me crazy for years. And they park their behemoths in a compact parking space. And over the line. My hate for them is almost tesla level.
