We're having this problem with our son: I'm diagnosed and he presents a lot like me (as you say, bot disruptive at school, but he shows more at home). It's a source of continuous worry that I'm not managing to get him the right support.

My lil bro is also autistic. He got help at an early age and diagnosed as a preteen. I went clothes shopping w my mom for him bc my lil bro were both the same size. I taught him the eye contact game. I was never disruptive because I was the parentified child. @ almost 30 finally taking care of me!

The reason for all of the late diagnosis of ASD is that the criteria for the diagnosis was rewritten in 2013. ASD as it is defined currently didn't exist until 12 years ago.
The changes in the diagnosis include a lot more people.

Late autism diagnoses initially ballooned with the DSM IV in 1994, as that’s when included Asperger’s for the first time. So many people got to realize the why after a lifetime of asynchrony. Asperger’s traits were folded into autism with the DSM 5 in 2013, but it was always “a form of” autism.

45 and just days ago diagnosed with ADHD. I'm processing a lot just now, and it's the anniversary of my mums death today. I think today is the days it's hit me hardest. I just want to talk to her about it all 😭

Thanks Hazel. Today has been hard. Talking to my PTs about reasonable adjustments and then coming home to FB post by my dad that reminded me today 4 years ago mum died. How can I forget stuff like that...well now I know! I'm tired and sad atm 😭

Focus on looking after yourself this evening, your mum would want that. Also anniversaries are one day, often memorable. Think of all the other times in the last year those memories and wanting to talk to her have risen. She's always there, whether your brain can recall certain dates or not 🫂

I'm doing exactly that. Smalls and her dad are outside drawing number with chalk on pavement and I'm working out what squares we still need to cut for our felt periodic table project! Kids are the cutters, I'm the sewer and the kids will add the symbols with stick on letters ❤️

I’m not a huge one for marking anniversaries to be honest as I know my loved ones would tell me off for wallowing. I miss them on and off throughout the year for varying reasons. But you now know why you miss important dates & have a really good reasons to miss her this week.

Most late 'diagnosed autistics' don't have a 'disorder' but are taught to believe they do and that their problems are due to 'disabilities', and are not due to society saying that only neurotypical ways are okay and society not recognising and thus not making social rules for our healthy neurotype.
