Yeah I definitely do not have a spare 5 years to wait for the NHS to tell me what I already know. And forget having a couple grand minimum for a private diagnosis 🤷

I'm not sure if self-diagnosis is valid any more than proving the absence of autism is viable.

But what's certainly valid is the fact that the health-care system is not working for many stakeholders. Systemic changes are needed, preferably paradigm shifts.

Diagnosis is a privilege and even a risk for some. I was autistic for 34 years before self identification, and another 3 years before diagnosis. Self ID changed my life, not the diagnosis. I am much healthier and happier since. Self diagnosis is valid!

I don’t diagnose autism in my practice, I refer out. I didn’t diagnose my own children, I did it through the medical system and the education system. I did diagnose myself! I’d like someone to try and prove me wrong 😂

i was privileged to have ins that pd for my autism dx @age 49. i'd already had a 3-yr autistic burnout during which i couldn't work, in my mid-20s. i suffered 2 more episodes by the time i was dx'd...one of which = 3 mos medical leave + 3 mos part-time. i worked thru the 3rd...and imploded my fam.

Many of us have done research awaiting diagnosis.
I have also done courses and am convinced I know myself. I can't afford private diagnosis from those who make a business out of our 'disability'.
If any think otherwise, I say, PROVE IT.
