"...there is a lot we can do differently if we stop blaming the students and reflect on our practices." @healthymindsconsulting.com

Autistic mothers in maternity care felt many staff didn’t understand how autistic people communicate & experience pain, & can "feel pain at the same level as non-autistic people—but often show it differently, including having fewer outward signs of pain." theconversation.com/autistic-wom... #autism

"Without more robust policies, teachers & staff who want to quit restraint & seclusion are powerless under administrators who resist change. I encourage all teachers who wish to change to speak up and fight for better and safer policies." @endseclusion.bsky.social: endseclusion.org/2022/07/19/a...

“When environments are designed with neurodivergent people in mind — ensuring accessibility, inclusion and safety — it is likely to make those spaces more inclusive and supportive for all.” insightplus.mja.com.au/2025/5/why-w... #neurodiversity #autism

Why are multiply marginalized autistic youth (race, income, gender/sexuality) more likely to have delayed diagnosis? Reasons include parents not knowing what autism is, or not fitting family or educators’ expectations of what autism ‘looks’ like. @craeioe.bsky.social: crae.ioe.ac.uk/examining-th...

A recent US presidential EO "refers to autism and other disabilities as 'a dire threat to the American people & our way of life.' This is fundamentally inaccurate. Autistic people have always been here, including before America existed. We aren’t new." autisticadvocacy.org/2025/02/asan... 1/2

All the content warnings: Bigoted, ableist, fascist HHS Secretary RFK Jr. “doesn't even bother to hide his dehumanizing view of those he deems ‘unhealthy,’” wants to take away life-saving drugs like SSRIs, and put the “weak” to work in “wellness farms.” RESIST. www.salon.com/2025/02/19/r...

One thing I give my mother mad credit for is raising all three of us with the mantra of: "Weird people are cool, being normal is boring." I didn't understand as a bullied kid, but as an adult surrounded by society? She was correct in every way.

Autistic here, and most of my friends are also neurodivergent in some way. We're all weird together and it rocks. My friends are really cool and so am I!

My best friends are also weirdos. #actuallyautistic #audhd

Society has done a horrible job in supporting the parents of neurodivergent kids—in giving both concrete guidance & real hope. That's part of why TPGA's community exists; so you don't have to go through the same trials we veteran parents did. Let us know how we can help. tinyurl.com/SupportingPa...

The quality of my friendships has improved since I stopped masking, which was draining & just resulted in me feeling even more lonely even amongst friends. Now the friends I made before I learned how to mask effectively are back in my life & I’m much happier. We have social skills of our own!

A teacher in primary school told me, "If you don't stop doing that, you won't have friends." It completely backfired. I interpreted it as, "If you do that, people will leave you alone" and started doing the undesired behavior a lot more often. 🤣🤣

A new must-read YA book on being Black and autistic! "All the Noise at Once tackles so many issues with such care and thought, including racism, classism, and class segregation, the stress of excellence & being a 'model citizen'." By Meg Eden Kuyatt, at TPGA. thinkingautismguide.com/2025/02/all-...

Social skills programs tend to teach autistic people "that they have to become normal in order to have friends. It’s not true. There are a lot of autistic people who have friends without becoming remotely normal. Oddness and friendship are entirely compatible." realsocialskills.org/2017/10/04/a...

“While my son’s autism became more obvious around the time he was getting most of his vaccines, there was zero evidence of a regression or an autistic traits explosion after the shots. The timing was a coincidence. Nothing more.” Reposting, please share. thinkingautismguide.com/2024/12/why-...

Autistic-non-autistic communication hiccups can be more like a language barrier than a deficiency on the part of Autistic folks. “And, like a language barrier, it can be bridged with effort and a willingness to learn—on both sides.” www.verywellmind.com/the-double-e... #Neurodiversity

Some reasons late autism diagnoses happen: “If you were socialized as a girl, chances are your neurodivergence was ignored because you weren’t disruptive enough. If you’re BIPOC, your symptoms were likely dismissed or misdiagnosed.” www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/wild... #neurodiversity #autism

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network @autisticadvocacy.bsky.social, “along with many other organizations and communities, is committed to fighting back against these attacks on our rights. Now is a time for action. Here are three things you can do right now.” autisticadvocacy.org/2025/02/here...

"I used to teach that all behavior is communication, and I’m trying to undo that teaching now, as I’ve learned from autistic people that all behavior isn’t necessarily communication." At TPGA. thinkingautismguide.com/2016/08/when... #neurodiversity #BetterWaysThanABA #autism

On the Strong Black Woman phenomenon being even more intense when Black women are also autistic, meaning "That let me mask, let me do everything I can to appear non-autistic so I can make it through this space." Dr. Jamie Pearson, interviewed at The Stoop: www.thestoop.org/home/2021/12...

"Not everybody understands my autistic son’s reality—which means we are constantly having to educate the people in our lives, & hope they will at least try to understand that our openly, obviously disabled dude is usually doing the very best he can." At TPGA: thinkingautismguide.com/2021/01/note...

On how "factors like racism & discrimination can hinder families from low income environments as well preventing Black and Brown families from accessing high quality supports for their or their loved one’s disability." By @kaishawnamusic.bsky.social at TPGA: thinkingautismguide.com/2025/02/unde...

Possibly the best AAC post of all time: If you or your autistic person use AAC [alternative communication], don't forget to enable descriptions of personal boundaries—because everyone should be able to say "stop" and "F*** off". From Mel Baggs, RIP: ballastexistenz.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/c...

"Under the best of circumstances, disabled students face barriers to access, and getting accommodations can be difficult. Dismantling the Department of Education and taking away protections from disabled students will make the problems students face even worse." autisticadvocacy.org/2025/02/acti...

Not only is the term "profound autism" harmful & limiting, but the #ProfoundAutism lobby works with the ABA industry, which treats autistic distress and pain as "behaviors" to be eliminated—and that is DANGEROUS. Instead, learn how to improve autistic lives: tinyurl.com/ProfoundAutismDoesNotExist

For real, though: Black boys are much less likely to be diagnosed as autistic, due to cultural and diagnostic biases. So Kanye West’s autism being missed is not exactly surprising. And also, his being autistic is not an excuse for inexcusable acts. www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/sp... #autism

Note that while we wrote this before Ye announced his diagnosis, we stand by it.

You may have seen news about the drug leucovorin (folinic acid) leading to "miraculous" speech in an autistic child. Sigh. Please know that the study being cited happened almost a decade ago, its effect on the other autistic children was inconclusive... 1/2

Others have remarked on this but the resurgence of the R word across the political spectrum is really wild? Like did I miss a memo about this? I expect it from some people but from others, you really can't come up with a better and more interesting way to describe people you don't like?

NEW: You may have seen that screenshot of a program for students with disabilities transitioning to adulthood being canceled under the Trump administration. The real story is so much deeper. 1/

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Jetblue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines joined a petition to try and overturn a rule that protections disabled passengers. www.scribd.com/document/829...

The Department of Education approved a grant to help students with disabilities into adulthood. Then Trump came along.

Do you live in one of these states? If so, your state is trying to get rid of Section 504 protections for people with disabilities. Make your voice heard! (More info in quoted post)

17 states have sued the United States government, asking to get rid of Section 504—which protects people with disabilities from discrimination in health care and human services. The case is called Texas v. Becerra, and @dredf.bsky.social has info and action items. dredf.org/protect-504/

Why ABA is not a good approach for autistic kids: "Dig deeper. What is going on with the child underneath this behavior? What are the child's strengths, their challenges in this context—their needs? What would it look like to truly support them?" by LearnPlayThrive: www.facebook.com/megproctorOT...

As someone who made it to 40 before recieving an endometriosis diagnosis, I can safely say yes to showing pain differently and not having it taken seriously 😔

This is so accurate. Expressing pain differently is what my kids do, every day. They've changed the way I think of and express pain also.
