The simple fact of the matter is that it would be better for Europeans now if the US went home completely--and left the continent's fate in Europeans' hands.

I wonder what the US troops here (near Ramstein and Erbenheim) actually think about all this. I wonder, at which point they will stop obeying Orders from the Trump-Regime, which is openly ruining the US as a superpower and serving anti-American interests
Reminder Rep Issa nominated Trump for Nobel Peace Prize 🏆. This is Trump's goal with Ukraine/Russia because he realized Bibi won't stop. He thought it would be easy to get the minerals deal for Putin incl Lithium and coal for steel production. His ignorance is still amazing and team incompetent.
nah americans are rash but we europeans are old and wise, being in a hurry is detrimental, we're right not to want to commit to enemity with the states, who knows maybe they'll come around soner than expected. The UK were fools as well, influenced by Putin as well, and we'll still welcome them back.
I don't think this is true. There's an implicit assumption that disengagement might end with US neutrality. In reality things can get much worse than that.
That’s a really good thought. If you realistically look at things the USA has caused pretty much all of the conflicts we see today and now making another mess in Ukraine. From wars to immigration crisis’s the USA fingers all over them. And the root cause? Oil. Just saying
Usha is supposedly there on a soft-power visit to watch sled dog races and learn about the culture. JD makes it all about supposed security concerns. Not the same thing.
Europe needs two big changes:
1. US troops out, because they represent a physical military threat to us.
2. US out of NATO so that it does not command in Europe and has no power of veto in support of Russia.
It would be a throw into the deep end of the pool introduction to swimming - maybe not a bad thing because apart from fine words there is still no actual material ramp up in spend on defence (with a small number of exceptions)
i don’t think this is that far off. i expect T to draw down forces there at some point. probably close some bases he thinks they aren’t paying enough for. it’s only been 2months. he’ll get there.
Well, regardless of the mental void in upper management, there still some in the US government who have a notion of geopolitics and why keeping a military presence near the middle east/Asia is important (aside from their current unenlightened theories about the world).
Honestly, the best chance you have of helping us get out of this is to shock us. Kick us out of NATO, out of the G7, formally ask for the Statue of Liberty back, sign a mutual defense treaty with Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Taiwan. Let Senators and CEOs know they're now in a non-allied country.
The incrementalism is not being done to confuse or misdirect the Europeans. It is to keep the GOP conferences in Congress both quiet and complacent, and to sap any possible motivation on the part of the top U.S. Military brass to openly balk at going along with Trump's agenda.
A view of US foreign policy: During the early Roman empire Marcus Licinius Crassus, who was one of the wealthiest men of his time had a private fire brigade. If your building was on fire, he would arrive and negotiate extortionate fees to put it out.
One would think so, but unfortunately we live here (apart from the Scandinavian countries, as always) in a complete madhouse. You probably don't follow the government negotiations in Germany, but I can tell you it's truly apocalyptic. I would actually prefer to be governed by cockroaches.

I've been anticipating since November that this would be a great potential moment for Pan-European security, even including the wayward UK. Ukraine in a strong Europe would lead to a far more secure future that even a friendly US regime.

US wants to destroy Europe.

You are arguing for hemisphere based powers instead of international cooperation. Putin wants Europe, Xi Asia, and Trump the North & Central America.
You're complying in advance. 👏

This isn't a comment on anything beyond that apprehension.
