I may be in the minority on this but

the small handful of covers that are superior to the originals includes this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMXhWf0vE7c

True story: back in 2003 or so, I requested “Bad Cover Version” on 97X, and @barbabney.bsky.social played that and this version of “Common People” back to back
deeply upsetting take but I’m resolved to be normal about it
This entire album is honestly so fun.
Put me in that minority as well.
in this house, we respect the Shatner remix
Jesus Christ.
I love this album.
i heard this song way before i ever heard the original and I prefer it

How dare you.
No.
This is an amazing cover

Bill is great as the narrator. The music really fills the space.

And Joe Jackson puts it over the top with just a power wave of rage and spite

So good
I respect your opinion but firmly disagree
💯
You are literally preaching to the choir. I agree with you, and I am on this track as a member of the “Louisville Choir” - the name Ben Folds gave to the crowd when I saw him in Louisville in 2003. Part of the show was recording us singing these parts. One of my favorite concert stories.
I don’t find it superior, but I do think it’s excellent. The original is one of my favorite songs.
The definitive version of that song as far as I'm concerned.
What else is on your list? Top of the dome without any real introspection:

Nirvana “Lake of Fire” > Meat puppets

Nirvana “The Man Who Sold the World > Bowie (borderline sacrilege, I’m not even a Nirvana guy)

Dr Dog “Heart it Races” > AIH

Manfred Mann “Blinded By the Light” > Bruce
100% agree
