Later today MPs will vote on my Renters’ Rights Bill amendment which would ensure disabled renters are allowed to make adaptations to their home. This is the first time a motion/amendment of mine as MP is going to a vote!

19% of disabled people live in the private rented sector, and of them, a shocking 1 in 3 are living in homes that are unsuitable, with consequences for mobility, mental health & employment.
An appalling 44% of private landlords will not rent to a disabled person who requires adaptations. My amendment would change this & make sure that if all tenants can put up shelves, then disabled tenants can put up grab rails, or put in accessible washing facilities.
I don't know, disability modifications, can be very are expensive. They cause future tenants to possibly not want the house. Putting in an accessible shower is expensive and may not what the owner wants. The tenant may leave after six months. local authorities/government take tax for this
Living in a home that meets our needs is an issue of basic human dignity. Hoping MPs across the house will agree and back this amendment. #RentersRights #rentersrightsbill
I hope you succeed. The HRA and Equality Act have existed for years now. There are no excuses for lack of reasonable adjustments, or not preventing discrimination.
I am curious why in the drafting of the Renters Rights Bill this was not considered.
While I understand the intention do you not think that the 44% will increase to every disabled person just in case they want to invoke the right of course in a hidden ‘non discriminatory’ manner (or at least can be proven to) & ultimately it would decrease the private rental accommodation available.
I agree. I think this bill will increasingly deter private investors from buy-to-rent. The result will be less rental stock available. Public Sector is going to have to step up! These means increased Central & Local Government taxes.
We also desperately need more social housing so renters don’t have to turn to unscrupulous private landlords. Councils should be allowed to take ownership of empty properties, renovate, and rent out. There is such waste out there. (And don’t get me started on second/third/holiday homes!!)
Good luck with this and all aspects of the bill. Too many landlords are filthy shirkers who will evict a tenant for complaining about something they need to sort out. The law on that needs to change - & fines for if they say they want to sell & then don’t. We see that game too.

....not rented accomodation
Renters should be allowed to make reasonable changes to properties by default ....after all many are buying the property for the landlord!!!
