I’d say callipers; a couple of flat meta rulers ( a shortish one - 20 cms; and a longish one: 50cms). A measuring tape. A decent 0.5mm mechanical pencil.

Blue tape. So much blue tape.

I really love having a marking gauge (I have mostly the wheel marking gauge type). On a similar note for hand tool work I really like having a panel gauge too, although easy enough to get by without one so maybe not one of the first things I’d get.

Ah, the bevel's indispensable companion: a bevel angle gauge.

I would also add a center scribe, a marking wheel, digital calipers, and Fastcap tape measures!

Staedler 925-25 Lead Holder - 2 mm is my go to shop pencil
a marking guage, I really enjoyed making my own
a hand plane to fight with
a deep addiction to a rare brand of tools found overseas (i do not recommend this)

Along with all the other excellent suggestions here, I have a set of basic steel rulers of various lengths that I find very useful for measuring and, especially, marking up - I use a marking knife and find them good for clamping and use as a guide rail.

I've added steel rules to my list. I just had to take the rule out of my combination square to get a good measurement.

I found a perfectly good set online for about 15 quid, so hopefully it'll be a fairly easy fix. I also got one of these recently and it makes scribing lines around edges a breeze, but I wouldn't call it essential - a marking gauge is a really good tool to have, and I recommend making your own.

The main thing is having the measurements from the end, makes lining up so much easier by fingertip.

I really like my 1,2,3 block for setting up my table saw. Also, a good pair of calipers comes in handy for joinery (or if you turn wood on a lathe). A small, self locking tape measure makes my life a lot simpler as well. I have a measuring tool fetish though, so I may not be the best person to ask 😁
