I tapped out on Duolingo when I couldn't learn more generally from the individual lessons; tried babbl (paid) but only worked for awhile before again losing the thread. Now considering Göthe Institute for a live online course, but they're expensive. Languages didn't come naturally to me, FWIW.

Duolingo is my main current resource - good to hear it helped you get a bit further along! (Currently lacking much real life practice, though, for geographic reasons)

Several years ago, I used this book series to fill my A2 vocab gap and progress toward B1. As a law & lit enthusiast, I found it easier to pick up new German words by comparing them to English ones in a narrative context. I haven’t finished all the books, but I want to revisit them in the future!

These books are great, I found you can mix up attentive listening and having it on in the background sometimes too. I also swear by 1970s German movies. Somehow the dialogue is easier to follow around A2 level and if you get something you like multiple viewings works wonders

Watching soap operas helped me with my French, back in the day... repetitive exaggerated dialogue is good for something!

And use the subtitles in German when you watch German language TV/movies - it makes understanding much easier. Music is also a good resource

"New German Cinema" stuff like Fassbinder, early Herzog and Wenders. A lot of it is on you tube with (sometimes dodgy) subtitles. Watching Fassbinder's Welt am Draht too many times helped me a lot, particularly for comprehension

You might also want to try Loriot: Ödipussy and Papa ante portas. Loriot is incredibly funny and there are puns etc. Mind you, though, I am Austrian and German is my L1
