If we combine lowering the cost of producing new housing with reducing the cost of transportation for households, we can open the door to home ownership for hundreds of thousands of young and working class Delawareans who would otherwise be shut out of this key path to building wealth and security.
While housing costs in sprawl might be lower, the overall costs for households (housing PLUS transportation) are significantly higher than in more compact, transit-oriented areas because residents in sprawled areas cannot avoid car payments, insurance, fuel and maintenance.
For working class and young people, the combined higher expense of housing PLUS transportation can be a savage financial burden and a source of deep ongoing anxiety.
