I feel this so hard as a parent. My kids have so much less autonomy than I did at their age to roam the neighbourhood and go places on their own, and they miss out on cognitive and social benefits because we've designed our cities to effectively exclude them from the public realm.

I've heard a lot of "success" in road safety re: lower rates of serious injuries & death of children. It's important to also recognize this doesn't mean anything is safer or better. It can also mean children aren't being allowed to exist in public, are being denied development opportunities, 1/2
