Incredible. Would that suggest that the stones themselves go a lot deeper into the ground because this is the prehistoric ground level?

The bluestones do seem to have twice as much underground than above (as you can see in the 2008 photo 👇)

The sarsens, however, are not very deeply bedded 😱

They are indeed but then the bluestones have been repeatedly moved about and modified right up to the late Roman period whereas the Sarsens, once set up, seem (apart from those that have fallen) to have stayed in place
