Hey, how do you define romantasy? What makes a book romantasy to you? Is it set in secondary world only? Does there have to be magic? What percentage of the book has to be romance VS what percentage must be fantasy? Can you give examples of romantasy VS fantasy that has romance subplot?

Most genre stuff I read is includes romance and/or murder/investigation. But I'm not gonna call something murdertasy or crimetasy. We have 'paranormal romance' which is also a blurry category. Percentages make me think of that scene in Dead Poets Society
Sometimes, I'd kinda like to see two of them. I'd like see more romantasy like Captive Prince actually. 🤔
I consider romantasy anything in which the majority of tension/plot impetus comes from relationship development rather than other fantasy plot elements. I don't think it needs to be set in a secondary world - urban fantasy is a distinct subgenre of fantasy.
1. The plot of the book would drastically differ or would not be possible without the romance
2. Happily Ever After (this may happen at end of series instead of first book)
Or something like the Old Kingdom Series where it technically exists but you can barely even call it a plot point. It seems unimportant next to everything else.
But if the readers are invested in the romance > plot then I think the readers dub it romantasy and it sticks.
