Yes. Often by men & social groups, it's very hard to get these laws repealed due to religious & conservative pushback. I think getting proper convictions is often difficult too.

It seems to me that some people are terrified they'll be attracted to the "wrong" people, so anything they deem "wrong", or even confusing, seems scary to them, and they lash out. The (basically imaginary) problem is entirely theirs, but the suffering isn't, alas.

I'd argue it was just less known about, maybe more subtle. We were less aware. Media's been used for political propaganda for decades, centuries even if we look past film and digital. I'm wary of glorifying the past.
