The press likes to make heroes of people — including Vance when he wrote Hillbilly Elegy and Musk — without bothering to wonder if there is another side and then seem astonished when it blows up later.

the press is both stupid and self-interested in promoting these hucksters. most ppl doing good work don't spend all their time bragging about it--which means doing actual journalism to cover them. it's easy to interview a scammy self-promoter! then they also get to cover the eventual fall from grace
