Carney and Poilievre with their out-of-the-gate promises of tax cuts assume the electorate is myopic, unserious and craven. Have they not witnessed the aspirational response of Canadians to Trump's threats over the past weeks? We want the same aspiration from our leaders, not baubles and trinkets.

I agree wholeheartedly. However, the comment related to the importance of being elected first (because the electorate is singularly focused on pocketbook issues that affect *them*), then governing on the substantive issues, has merit.

Working with companies in transformation efforts, I always say time is like oxygen in a crisis. We are burning a lot of our oxygen in this "calm before the storm" when we should be battening down the hatches, exactly as you outline in your post.

As a dual citizen living in the states, this has been on my mind trying to make plans for the future. It's not encouraging to see overall messaging from the LPC mostly mirroring what I saw from the US DNC and UK Labour. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I see similar dynamics playing out in CA vs US

Never waste a good crisis. Rather than focusing entirely on anger with the U.S. we need our leaders to lead. Canada must diversify away from the U.S. for both our economic security and our national security. We have fallen into the trap of giving them the power, which leaves us at their mercy.

It's baffling. Existential threats from both the US and from climate change but the political imagination on display is so limited. Can we please have someone with a vision? Someone who has an idea of the national economy? Someone who recognizes the danger of an authoritarian US?

Sadly, vision isn’t what gets you elected. Talk to the average Canadian. I think Carney has more vision (ie build 🇨🇦) than what we’ve seen for a long time in a politician, but he’s smart enough to know that the vision doesn’t matter if you don’t offer carrots to get into office in the first place.

Known this kid a long time and it was upsetting that he wouldn’t listen at all to me. He knows I’m very well-versed on these matters, yet he was smug in his own bubble of disinformation. PP, Rogan, Peterson and Musk are his heroes.

Try telling them that maybe don’t spend a few hundred per month on a smartphone, streaming services, DoorDash, gaming and god knows what other nonsense they’re up to.

I had to sacrifice a heckuva lot to save up for a home. Some of these spoiled idiots have no idea what sacrifice means.

I disagree. I think it's a waste of a moment in which a lot of people are paying attention especially around tariff policy. There's a hunger for responses to this threat but no one who seems to want to engage with it.

I agree that the moment may be wasted, but I’m just being realistic. Human nature doesn’t change much. Taxes and affordability issues still carry a lot of weight for average folks.

95% of the population isn’t on here having this deeper discussion.

I don't think it even has to be super deep. The desire for retribution against the US for what it's doing to us. A party that can say this is what we are going to do in a way that sounds tangible and real, I think that would work for them.

Poilievre is obviously very tepid in this area, but I like what Carney is proposing (ie large nation building projects, investing far more of public monies here, eliminating inter-prov trade barriers, closer trade/defence relationships with EU, etc.)

All of that helps to distance us from 🇺🇸.

Totally agree, but people are still not understanding this, nor asking their leaders for it. I hear “cost of living” as still the number one concern and i think politicians are too.

I respect your position, but I think advocating revenue generation in a writ period is tantamount to just asking for a different electorate.

Each of the parties legitimately thinks they'd do the best job in the big chair, and it's not reasonable to think they'd hobble themselves during a campaign.
