is the goal to have the buttons look like wood? my suggestion is to make the buttons even brighter, think like pine, so they stand out from the background. then the text could be black or very dark, so it looks like its been burned on. not sure if thats the vibe you want, just my first thought

I didn't even think of burning, I was going for carved, but them being burnt on would solve my legibility problem.

Yeah even as is the burnt look should give you enough contrast between the text and the button. Id try and make the buttons more obvious too imo, maybe a drop shadow, lighten them a bit more, etc. The text being darker should help a lot though

I'll try and do something similar to the hexagon, give it a shadow on one side.

I think it's still pretty difficult to read, unfortunately. If I blur my eyes, I can't really tell there's text.
