Throughout Trump's 1st term, Russian aggression continued in Eastern Ukraine, killing hundreds of civilians and hundreds, maybe thousands, of Ukrainian soldiers defending their country. Among many others, the brother of @okhromeychuk.bsky.social was killed during Trump's time in office.

What did Trump say about the ongoing Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine in his 1st term? Nothing. He never, in his entire 1st term in office acknowledged the fact that Russia was committing crimes in Ukraine.

When asked about the conflict, he mentioned it in the same kinds of terms we're hearing from him now: the need for Zelensky to "make a deal". Also in Trump's 1st term, of course, Putin consolidated Russia's occupation of Crimea. This included the detention, torture, and disappearance of Crimeans who objected to annexation. Another notable act of aggression by Russia against Ukraine in this period was the creation of infrastructure designed to cement the annexation. This included the expansion of military facilities and, of course, the bridge over the Kerch strait, linking Crimea to Russia.

Unlike the other cited examples, this one was directed squarely at US interests and it received not a quantum of response from Trump despite ample opportunity and multiple high ranking individuals in the first Trump admin pushing for one.

And if Russia slows down and rearms during Tump administrations and tries to create *more* deaths, refugees, and chaos during Democratic administrations it isn’t the big zinger they think it is. It’s just evidence Russia and Trump work hand in hand to advance each other’s interests.
