HBO would never try to sell us concealer or glitter eye stuff ... it was Amad Rashad, Dennis Miller and Dream On (you dont know that show but it was very important to me)
Man listen, my grandma got cable and canceled it, American Cablevision never came back and disconnected it and she had free cable and HBO for like 20 years.
Must have been years after Robocop. I remember it being a Showtime exclusive when it came out. They had just taken the Orion movies from them at the time.
I ain’t grow up with it, but later in his life, my grandpops started letting loose and spent a lil bit of his VA check on HBO. I wasn’t supposed to know that, but I learned a lot after 1AM thanks to the cover of his CPAP machine.
One of the first times the good fortune of my youth was made clear to me was getting to NYU and seeing how many others were psyched to have HBO on the college TV list (this was in 2002). I had always had it and thought that was normal. (And yes Dream On is a very important show for, uh, reasons)
I did not appreciate growing up with cable and then satellite TV until recently. I think about all the music/movies/TV I would have never watched had I not stumbled upon it. Our current streaming environment is not the same. There's no channel flipping discoveries.
mom was a homeowner as a single parent and an early adopter of many tech things, so HBO was in the house from the time you needed one of those boxes with three rows you clicked through (manually, no remote) to access all the channels
I honestly can't think of anything on HBO worth watching. I saw the last 2 seasons of Curb and Black Lady Sketch Show last month on the free weekend before turkey day

I watched Whoopi Goldberg do the making of "Captain EO" on a free weekend.
Saturday nights, am I right?
