I've been freelance for 20 years or something. I am by no means rich, but I have found the key is to allow people to pay you, expect it and so on. If you start chasing, it can have the opposite effect. This could be more because I'm a woman but I do try to cultivate a quiet aura of self respect.

Oh, the chasing should only start when you're waiting after the stated "within x days" note stipulated on the invoice. I've always felt that that was fairly reasonable. It becomes insulting when you have to chase multiple times after that point.

I've heard it said that a true martial arts master never needs to fight, because their aura is strong. So I guess I try to have this with payments - I want an easy life so my aura is always good enough that I never need to remind someone. It tends to work well x

Totally sympathise with you Tom, and I see this reflected in the areas I work in but in a slightly different way. Creative is a requirement but businesses don’t understand it, so don’t value it. I think it has gotten worse in the digital era, where technology has made creativity look easier…

and ‘measurement’ is essential because people with little imagination demand certainty. This has undermined the value of creative as something unique, it’s not respected, so fees go down and/or go unpaid.
‘Pay peanuts get monkeys? Give me monkeys any day’.
