Over the last 100+ years, governments have put thousands of rules dictating residential neighbourhood design. But have those rules made neighbourhoods better?
I'd say it's made them objectively worse. I'll take a World War I-era neighbourhood over any post-WW2 design any day.

Newer neighbourhoods have gone back to smaller lot sizes like pre-ww2 neighbourhoods with more smaller laned SFHs alongside duplexes and townhouses.
Still a lot more to be done though.
One can argue that so many of the issues we have are due to those stores not being around.
