dudes still think Tyler Durden is a hero even though he turns into the explicit antagonist of the film like halfway in. Media literacy is terrible right now, but more importantly, these people don't care about what the media means, they just appropriate symbols from it and it them as they will
I tried watching a video from one of these fans who thought Rey was a bad character, like "ok, I don't see it myself but let me hear your talking points" and it was a solid 40 minutes of a angry dude trying to verbally beat into you point-by-point no female should ever do what Luke Skywalker did.
I think you can make a general criticism that 7/9 in general fail from trying to just speedrun the hits with names changed, because you can't do that in an established series.
However, I've never seen anyone mad about Rey actually make this argument.
I do remember my Star Wars GM around that time hated her though, and he wanted to put all these restrictions on my lady force sensitive because things like "women aren't strong enough to use bowcasters" (right after the movie where elderly Han fired Chewie's one-handed came out).
I'll never stop thinking of Republicans stoked to vote for Trump in 16 screaming fuck you I won't do what you tell me because that's the only part of the song they understood
Which is annoying, because things being what they are it let a lot of viewers of the American persuasion read the story as "ah yes, this is the story of our brave struggle against the British, which of course is still what defines us"
"I don't know if people recognize how evil and terrible Darth Vader was before the last five minutes of a fight where his boss is torturing his son...alright in Revenge of the Sith he's gonna murder an entire elementary school and beat his pregnant wife"

The satire of Robocop and Starship Troopers being missed is one of those WHAT THE FUCK
See also "Kylo Ren is making fun of us!" and "Poe was right and Holdo is stupid!"

🤔 Mfer, have we been watching the same Star Trek & Doctor Who? It's always been progressive for it's time.
