I think we have to square with the reality that we must defend sex as something we should be able to shape on our own terms.

We should be able to take hormones, switch hormones, get abortions, get hysterectomies, get SRS, bank sperm or eggs, all on our own terms.

Or, perhaps we should make a new category of prescriptions that don't ever need to be renewed. You just get diagnosed with it once and it's good forever. Because HRT and insulin are meds that we need forever.

That way we could ensure there's always an available supply of medication for the people who need it. The problem of course is rhat these prescriptions would still be gatekept by doctors, so we need to fix that somehow.

As somebody on two medications that I will be taking every day until I'm dead, the fact that I have to keep getting my pharmacy to contact my doctor to just go "Yup, since he's still alive, he keeps needing more of these, can we please give them to him?" I remember a story of an American author...

who was travelling in Greece when she discovered her last vial of insulin had gone off. She was already at the airport and decided to make a desperation attempt at a pharmacy. It was OTC, no prescription and ~8 dollars. Them: "All you can do with this is treat diabetes, why would you need a scrip?"

the insulin one is absolutely crazy. one of the craziest failures of US healthcare imo. the idea that if you're uninsured you need to take horse pancreas insulin from like the 1920s or pay $10,000 per year or however much it is, is fucking nuts.

i meant cattle, sorry, not horses. until the 1980s, everyone used cow insulin. i was also mistaken that Walmart is selling this: their cheap over-the-counter brand was using a very old human insulin process, so it was much slower in terms of onset and lower effectiveness

the reason is capitalism and it's cruel. Medication should be accessible to everyone and anyone, the 'risk of abusing medication' is just code for preserving capitalism and for-profit healthcare
