While it was a different time and the Soviets played a large role, the US dealt with a great number of headaches during the cold war because of our overly direct involvement in the region. Let's not go back to that time.

Going from memory here, but hasn't Panama since then did a major renovation/widening or something of that sort of the canal? It is not like they haven't sunk a ton of money into keeping it current for use and all of that.

Yes. I had the wonderful opportunity to see the giant lock doors being delivered. But it’s still not as important to the U.S. as it once was.

I get that, my point was more not only would our country be reneging on something it did but also stealing real value they put into it (you know, on top of stealing land that is theirs). It be like giving someone a house and revoking the gift after the people renovated it.

Yes. A house originally built on their land and that I used without paying rent for it for around 80 years. Then 25 years later, when they expanded and remodeled the house I come back to reclaim the house I “built”, without question

The canal was not an expense for the US.

The military bases around the canal were an expense. The canal itself was self-sufficient. The US management was very inefficient and did not used to its full potential. Once it returned to Panama, they have done it a lot better than the US did.
