This was definitely something that was tearing the urbanist movement apart: we had all these people who said the same things, but with very different intentions.

Mamdani's campaign helped clarify who was who and where they were.

Idk if I could explain it myself tbh. Just know that the abundance movement did push for a lot of urbanist ideas (better trains, density, etc) but it also pushed shit like anti-union ideas (with the idea that it would make building cheaper). It also pushes for big developments.

But there is another branch of urbanism that sees it more as a way to make things fair and equitable for everyone. Bike lanes, bus lanes, etc are good not cuz they're good and fun but because they allow people to move around in a cheap and sustainable way. Density isn't bad, etc.

This isn't really a binary thing, it's more of a spectrum and likely matches the philosophy of the person on other, non-urbanist topics.

Essentially, a right-wing urbanist vs a socialist (who tend to be urbanist just by default). And I guess there's a centrist urbanist (Abundance movement).

Again, these are random thoughts I've had while seeing the "schism" (idk if it is that, but there is a split). I do know that for a long time socialists were wary of urbanists due to the big-development thing and vice-versa, but this election, a bunch of urbanists I know joined DSA.
