Does this have the potential to turn into something as big as the “Ian Patterson scandal”?

As an aside, when sorting through my late mother in law’s papers we came across a hospital letter to her signed by Patterson so her case will surely have been reviewed.

Paterson was a criminal operating for profit. No suggestion of that here but from a systemic failings view the hallmarks are all there.

So so far. We have done the easy bits. A bit of guidance here, a bit of process there, a new regulation here, a new law there. But we have not changed the fundamentals of why scandals like this happen.

These scandals always have some failure of psychological safety. Something that can’t be developed through policy. Something that takes time and effort and all too often doesn’t seem tangible enough for Trusts to invest in

Great Ormond Street had said it would only publish a summary of the damning @RCSnews report, and not until December.

Ghastly - sounds like our own version of ‘Dr Death’, Christopher Duntsch in the US, also an orthopaedic surgeon (adults not children). Execs were well aware or turned a blind eye.

This keeps happening should there be fully independent appraisal rather than get a mate to sign off as at present? Is legislation required forcing hospitals to investigate complaints and for all such complaints to be simultaneously sent to an independent national regulator (not the discredited GMC)

Also, surely this is a police matter first, the GMC should pick up after the police finish. Suspend him, let the police lead.

Beyond the parade of more obvious red flags, it’s very concerning that the junior doctors didn’t feel they could or should participate in the investigation. It worries me, because if something kept them from speaking up, it probably extends beyond this case.

I absolutely think this is an example of the toxic culture juniors face. They don't feel safe to speak up and worry doing so will damage their prospects. A flashing red sign.
