I had some fool try to explain to me that adjuncts were professionals who volunteered to teach a course based on their actual work experience. Has not been true since sometime in the 1960s. I suspect now that all intro classes and non-major classes are taught by "contingent" faculty.

Speaking as a currently contingent faculty member (despite having been at my institution for going on 7 years)....I also teach major-critical courses and our 300 level senior capstone seminar.

Mine paid roughly $50K a year plus benefits. The university didn't. If you had tech writing experience and a PhD, you could be the core of a tech writing program, but you probably are already. I was a poet and s.f. writer but six or so SF novels from commercial presses didn't count.

I was a technical writer for five years before I went to graduate school. These days I'm college faculty but the salary differences are more related to the fact I live in Boston versus the Midwest previously. Sadly, I don't my novels count for either as well.
