Maybe it’s the “low information” that was the reason for the high initial ratings. The hope needs to be that any amount of truth that gets through now will stick.
At jury selection recently, a few older men said they proactively follow news sources. Most people replied that they avoid the news unless it comes across their social media feeds or they happen to pass a TV. Things must be getting really bad if it's penetrating their insulated bubbles.
That's easy to explain. These are the folks that get much of their info from what's happening in real life - prices, ICE raids, etc. If they are medium or high level news consumers they are getting fed a lot of the dominant narratives - often RW propaganda that rationalizes Trump's madness 24/7.
The complaint was about the prior state: how could they have had a positive view of a twice impeached convicted felon and adjudicated rapist who mishandled his first term so bad - and vote for him.
Media coverage made both choices equivalent, so why not the guy they liked on the apprentice?
The crucial thing is they now have enough info to know who to blame when they see empty shelves at Wal-Mart, or higher grocery costs, or their local hospital closing due to Medicare policies, or a mechanic telling them they can't get the part to fix their car, or their construction jobs drying up.
They get more information around campaign season but they get bad information that inclines them to vote for assholes. After campaign season that disinformation wears off.
Also, some (not all to be sure) of the powerful people who rehabilitated and pumped up Trump in the years leading up to the election haven’t been thrilled with some of the things he’s done so far and are less inclined to protect him like they were.
I suspect they’re getting it from lived experience.
The economic information is coming from inside of their house, so to speak.
“If this theory is right, it means that incumbents are also uniquely sensitive to economic contractions, since there is little they can do to counter narratives.“
this is NOT an I know someone who knows someone's BIL
THIS is up close and very personal to someone I'm blood related to.

I asked a customer if she was Canadian. She said no, but it started a conversation. She asked if Canadians were outraged. I told her that they had cancelled their wholesale orders w/ us. She said she was a Trump voter and just didn't know if his callous words had any effect. I assured her they did.
I suspect part of it is they're expecting immediate wins in their lives and when Trump doesn't deliver they turn on him. But yeah, there was a lot of BS out there around the election and now the coverage (and their 401ks) are breaking through the bubble.
Intelligent people have come to the conclusion that the current admin is focused on defying law & order, and will use “alternative fact” news to deflect from their incompetence.
It is important to realize the structure of the internet is not pro-Trump so much as it is pro-anger and if Trump gives people enough reasons to be angry, the tide will turn.
That said, a lot of the information highway is for sale and he and his allies will use it. The grift is too good not to.
Could be the opposite - the increased coverage breaks through at election time, and then as it slacks off and they don't get any of the freebies or improvements they were promised, they just naturally lose interest in him.
yeah, the problem is that they don't pay attention now, but three months before the election, they get lies shoved down their throats and they believe every single word of it. These kinds of people aren't learning anything right now. They are just vibes based and will continue to be vibes based.

They didn't 'see' what the previous government was doing for them, so they assumed it was all bad.
They still aren't seeing what the current government is doing for them, so... it's a huge disappointment.
They expected everything to change.

Problem is when it comes time to vote next year they'll have heard something somewhere about democrats.

Things didn't get better.
If they do the people will change their mind. It helps to replace 'low-information' with 'vibe-based'
