The real mystery is, why square brackets? Is this an editorial interpolation? Or is there an outer set of round brackets, bracketing a larger discourse, which we cannot see?
It reminds me of the video of a guy who was washing raw chicken meat with dish soap until someone made him understand that he was just supposed to rinse it with water.
Yes, it’s weird. A colleague ended up admitted to hospital because she washed the inside of a chicken and didn’t realise she had a small cut on her hand. It got infected. I’ve lost count of the chickens I’ve cooked and I’ve never washed any of them.
