i still feel like cringe at it's root is the physical sensation (cringing and curling up) coming from spanish shame (or fremdschämen or secondhand embarrassment) but the internet twisted it into just plain disgust which is wrong

People sometimes say "Cringe isn't real" and I disagree. Cringe IS real. I feel it every time my brain reminds me of that embarrassing thing I did in college. It's just that it isn't someone drawing a fun colorful OC or a furry having some fun at a convention

At some point "cynical and detached all the time" became the go-to cool personality online but after a while it's just tiring. I unfollowed lots of people I liked once their accounts became nothing but "wow looks like shit" about literally everything. A little cynicism is warranted, but come on.

Cringe: that one moment in a local theater production where a lead has visibly missed their cue/forgotten their lines and you can feel the tension on stage as everyone is like "oh fuck oh fuck"

To piggyback off you, I think that things can only only cringe if they remind you of yourself. If you see art that makes you cringe, it’s because there’s an aspect of yourself you don’t like that you’re projecting onto the art.

I don't think it even needs to be something you don't like, really

But I think the difference is that the verb cringe hasn't changed, just the adjective
