"Cringe" went from a very genuine unavoidable primal sensation you get from watching someone try to get a cafeteria to do the Harlem shake or someone bombing during a ventriloquist act in a talent show and it rapidly became "any behavior rooted in personal joy that I don't like"

Cringe: that one moment in a local theater production where a lead has visibly missed their cue/forgotten their lines and you can feel the tension on stage as everyone is like "oh fuck oh fuck"
But I think the difference is that the verb cringe hasn't changed, just the adjective
