Why is anyone still using an app? Trust Auntie, y’all betta learn to use a calendar like we did in the old days. With the way companies get hacked and our data gets sold to the highest bidder, the last thing you want is for your personal info to be used against you.
I can’t see any reason to use this app given there are safer ones but if you feel you must use a vpn and select a blue state only financial transactions can mandate you give private info and that to is limited
Euphemisms only go so far if the data resembles a menstrual cycle. Also, google and outlook does not encrypt calendar data in a way that is subpoena-proof. iCloud calendar does, if advanced data protection is on, and cycle tracking (along with all other Apple Health data) uses end to end encryption.
It is, and they explicitly state they will not sell your data or comply with requests for it. Still not risk-free, but a far better digital choice than the other options out there.
HOWEVER as with most things the person most likely to report you is your partner, who may also not protect your data. Don't use their sharing features.
I don’t use it personally simply because there’s no reason for me to let him know electronically. Also, sharing personal info just seems creepy. If I ever needed to tell him, I’d just tell him irl.
Literally got notification from my health care provider that they had been breached and my data was compromised, but somehow I'm supposed to keep deeply personal medical information off the internet. I think there was also an earlier one with my health insurer, but I've lost track.
How often does data show that women are dismissed by physicians? Your menstrual pain isn't that bad. You're not bleeding that much etc. They don't just track your period they ask heavy or light etc. How long it lasted etc.
I have endometriosis and PCOS and my period tracking app allowed me to show my doctor that when I said I bled for 2 years straight, I wasn't exaggerating.
They’re really useful for TTC because you can track everything associated with fertility like ovulation test results and basal body temp. There’s also a version of the app for once you’re pregnant. Tons of women use this type of app while trying for a baby, which is why privacy is important.
I don't disagree. You asked about the utility of the app. It's no different than people who innocently believe their personal health information is protected on fitness/health tracking apps.
I have a niece who is in her early 30s and docs were not listening to her. She would forget to keep track on a regular basis on a calendar. The app would ask her if she started was it heavy or light etc. Her doctor accepted the app information. It is the quasi medical aspect of it. I wish I had it.
We used to do this on detailed paper calendars and then on special offline excel templates with standardized symbols, criteria. It was incredibly popular, and useful for fertility treatment. Eventually it was turned into an app…personally I think that it would still work offline if needed
5% of women have PMDD, which is dysphoria that starts on day 14 of the 28 day cycle. Dysphoria means your perspective of yourself and others changes, aka you feel worthless and hopeless. When you wake up feeling hopeless, seeing the app on your phone say, "It is indeed Day 14" is your only comfort.
You can take steps to prevent it from being reasonably admissible in a court of law, though - such as denying GPS access, and using a VPN for your connection.
It's not about people in aggregate. It's about them searching for someone who appears to be pregnant but has no baby, or has a couple months' gap and then resumes. Alone, that's not enough evidence but maybe the state starts investigating and collecting more. Especially if a partner reports it.
If you are a man, you should install it on every phone, tablet, or anything else you can install it on. And do say you live in Texas, Idaho, or a similar state.
Would love to see them spend their resources figuring out where you got your abortion.
I'm in. I've also been thinking about creating a blog about my helping an underage female across state lines to get an abortion without parental consent. Of course this has never happened but to have them waste money on the investigation would be priceless.
Absolutely, unless you have either had a hysterectomy or you tube's tied. The idea is to screw up the data that is sent to the app. You can bet that data is sold somewhere, somehow.
Everyone who sees this thread should download, install, and use this app, and fill it so full of bogus data that it destroys the database. False locations. 10 day or random cycles. Whatever you can think of. Even men... and LIE about your gender if needed.
So wrong!!!
It's also so pathetic
I will never get over how so many Americans (men & women) just voted in a way that supports their daughters granddaughters and wives having fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers
Also, a lot of smart watches have period trackers. I wouldn't turn off that feature. Even if your watch isn't connected to internet and just Bluetooth, as soon as you sync to your phone, you can be tracked. Just something to consider
A holiday gift idea for all your daughters, nieces, granddaughters—cute purse calendars to track their periods with a note to delete period tracking apps. Maybe toss in some condoms? make sure they know they can call you for help.
Makes great conversation around the holiday table this year.
There is a rather sinister reason why employers often partner with Ovia to provide their Ovie+ services for free. Ovia sells that data back to the employer in an “anonymized” fashion. They can’t explicitly tell your employer you are pregnant or trying…
Physical calendars go on sale after the beginning of the year. Take advice from an older lady, track your cycle there. I’m teaching my children the same.
YES - I am pretty sure they intend to bring back full on, in-chains, not-in-a-prison-slavery - but I'm ALSO scared for any people with black and brown heritage - they have been saying "Not a single drop" for a really long time and I'm afraid the plans are coming to fruition
I used to follow you on Twitter. Back in 2019. Elon kicked me off for telling him to F off. Thin skinned yatzi. He tweeted "At this point everyone should vote Republican". And I retweeted his comment with my comment. I said" I think Elon can FO , I'm not giving my rights away so this spud ....
Can retain a fucking tax breaks". FOElon". And boom. Then Twitter sent me a email saying I could come back for a monthly subscription. I emailed back. It'll be a cold day in Hell before I go back that cesspool. The end.😁
I've refused to take a DNA test ever since they were made available to the public because I don't trust corporations. Once you take it, you lose control. I've always feared that eventually insurance companies will use the results to deny coverage for having a family history of a condition.
Their policy seems to say they absolutely WILL hand over data for a legally valid request. Which is likely why they want your state, so they can retain data (and sell it where permitted by law.)
If you have an iPhone, use the cycle tracker in the Health app. End to end encrypted, even from Apple.
It's still private medical information and should be covered as such. The company I work at isn't a healthcare provider either, but the required yearly privacy training they make us do makes it clear that mishandling such information is a huge liability.
HIPAA applies to healthcare providers, insurance companies, and some healthcare clearinghouses, not the general public. I'd be willing to bet that buried deep in the fine print of the apps' terms of service is a clause saying you agree to the app's sharing your information.
Yep. Go to Health, Browse, and it’s under categories. Dedicated app for it on the Apple Watch that also uses heart rate and wrist temperature to predict fertility. You don’t have to have a watch to use it, but it makes it more accurate.
And if anyone can keep your data private it’s Apple.
The unfortunate thing is, the paper calendar could be found and used against a pregnant person as well. Thinking about the woman involved in the TX lawsuit whose boyfriend found the evidence of her receiving abortion meds in the mail - he would have found that calendar if motivated
I have been preaching this for the last 2 years. NEVER use an app to track periods. That’s what paper calendars do very well and they don’t spy! Also, very important NEVER buy pregnancy tests in states with strict abortion bans. Please support groups that actively help women get what they need.
If you buy pregnancy tests in one of the fascist states, pay cash and/or have a post-menopausal friend buy them for you. Don't give them ANY data. No credit card info; no surveillance video that can be subpoenaed by Paxton pervert types.
if you purchase one in an abortion restricted state, especially if you use a debit or credit card, the purchase is tracked ( you know the bar codes on anything you buy?)If you are female of reproductive age, they know. Order them from out of state.
Obviously. But I see advice for avoiding pregnancy tests fairly often and was wondering if I am missing something about them? Catching unwanted pregnancy early is very important, better buy one and use at home, then to let a doctor accidentally discover it at some unrelated check up.
Contact a friend or Planned Parenthood in a friendly state and have test kits sent to you. Buy them before you think you need them. Mostly use reliable birth control.

That's the time I am referring to.
What's the actual utility of an app like that?
Screw that. I'm not using apps to track anything. That's what physicians are for.
What's the role of internet in the process?
What's the added benefit of sharing your personal information with an app?
Convenience is tempting, but costly.

I'm questioning the privacy and safety of apps in general, and this one in particular for women who live in states where abortion is now a crime.
Can’t escape your whereabouts if you use the internet.

Jj… delete it

Ya gotta be kidding me!
I am sorry ladies. These Republican pieces of shit are not representative of all men.
Civil war is looking more and more appealing everyday.
Makes great conversation around the holiday table this year.
Because if they let you go before you’re pregnant, there’s no way to file a claim.
Don't we have democracy-minded women capable of creating safer apps?
Time for bed. I'm getting grouchy too.
