Thanks for sharing your remembrance. George was such an impactful teacher. He was a master of pulling just the right strings to push harder, and to explore our own interests and strengths and not let the contemporary borders of academia stand in the way.
Perhaps we should all dig out George’s comments on our student papers and do a “The primary shortcoming of this paper is….” collage. It would awesome, but I think folks might get the wrong idea. Out of context of his support they’ll look mean.
I really love your reflections on his teaching style. George really demonstrated that while you can follow a set of best practices to be a good teacher, you can throw them all out the window and be great. Teaching is a form of magic, and wow could George conjure.
