The difference with historical information is that the full canon is conjecture to begin with. it's all interpretation—some of which is certainly disproven by later interpretations. Nobody lives or dies in the hermeneutical interstices of historicity...
My point is maybe to be somewhat post-postmodernist, in that it points to the fact that all the information and ideas anyone brings to bear to critique history is also necessarily part of the historical record. There is no position that exists outside of language. No viewpoint exists above history.
It's not the historical debate that does the killing though, it's the policy ramifications made by legislators and executive leadership, all of which would be dramatically improved by the pedagogical instrument I outlined...
