My son, now pre-med, said that very thing to me in high school. Unfortunately his plans to become a YouTube/soccer plan didn’t pan out. He was really close of course but had to fallback on those stupid science courses I made him take.
It seems to me that the best days of that field are over
But, it is definitely a young person's playground. I was able to stay viable until 51. It benefits a malleable brain and a body that can work 60 hour weeks.
I got to work with NeXT, SGI, Sun, the dawn of Linux, Cisco, Palo Alto. Good fun.
It is never too late. The good thing about learning is that you can always choose to do it. There is a difference between I forgot to learn science and I didn’t learn science and now deny that science exists.
I told him that even if he became a successful soccer player, his underwear model wife would run off with all his money and his financial planner because he was so boring and too ignorant to understand his own finances.
So, okay... I screwed around all thru out all my school years. My shitty excuse was my dad was so physically & emotionally abusive so as an adult I see I was acting out. But nobody asked about the bruises or swollen eyes. In all honesty the only classes that had my attention was team sports.
Everyone needs to learn the basic science of everyday living just like everyone needs to know the everyday basics of reading, writing and arithmetic to function.
Yeah sure, but I didn't ever use Sin, Cos, or Tan ever. Nor geometric proofs. Pointless busywork could be replaced by "how to spot bullshit and actually research things properly" class.

When I was an English major in college, I was frequently told "why would you take such a useless degree? Get real world vocational training."
Perhaps I wanted to know how to make good choices, recognize lies & misdirection, analyze events, plan for an uncertain and dynamic future? I win.
I had a successful career in IT, making over six figures multiple years, homeowner, world traveler, government science support engineer.
It's not always a death sentence. There are multiple paths. For me, I needed three years break to work poor.

I was remarking something similar to my sister, wondering why all of our kids look so strange. 🤔🫤😯
"He chose...poorly."
