The feathers provide great insulation! They are year round residents on Long Island. They will hunt rodents if the water freezes.

This heron was in Areskonk Creek in Moriches. You can find them in most bodies of water.

Umm... it was 16 degrees here in Eastern PA this morning when I took my dog out for his morning walk! A beautiful fox was in the field, but I didn't have my phone to take a picture. Thanks for the Great Blue heron- beautiful!
