I was experimenting with this in the late 00s, its a really neat concept. You really need a multi-faceted scanning drum for this to work properly at the resolutions and speeds we need.

Would probably work better using two spinning mirrors. One spinning quickly for the horizontal scan lines and one spinning at, say, 60 rps, to scan vertically. The laser power could then be modulated in the same way as a CRT luminance.

Yes.

To do vector stuff means being able to accelerate and decelerate quite massive items quickly, which will take a lot of energy to do.

Swapping to a raster system with constantly rotating mirrors gets rid of this and makes the physics simpler. You "just" have to worry about synchronisation.

Oh, indeed, but doing it quickly electromechanically is very difficult, and probably will require custom hardware, such as servos/motors and sensors.

Yes, I keep my MiSTer connected to a Commodore 1084 so I can always enjoy those beautiful scan lines on a vivid and bright CRT. It completes it for me. The lack of native CRT signals is how I'm always let down by conventional emulation...
