Farabee and Risto have basically the same contract, if we leave this season having traded the 24/25 year old player with significantly more upside (for very little) but holding onto the 30+ one, that's a big red flag for Danny.

Is this the front office trying to lesson the blow to the the trade-for-picks-or-you-aren't-doing-your-job fanbase when Risto is here after the deadline even though in his mid-season presser, Danny basically said Risto is playing above his AAV and it would cost the team more to replace him?

IMO they're keeping their powder dry for what might be an historically active summer in the NHL. Sure, you could sell Risto for a late 1st now, but what if there are 5x as many bidders in July when the entire league has more space under an increased cap?

There is no need to rush moving out players with term. You can still trade them over the summer when everyone has cap space and roster spots or at next year's deadline. I will keep banging this drum.

Frankly, a lot of people aren't following along with the Jones/Briere strategy which very clearly hasn't embraced tanking or a "scorched earth" re-build. Flyers fans have been clamoring for that tact, despite nothing but evidence to the contrary from this FO.

Jones has said 2-3x in interviews that they're not interested in "the best Center available. We want the best Center." I think that quote is telling. They're not going to sell Laughton ('26 exp) and/or Risto ('27 exp) for the best asset available in 2025. Just wait and see what's avail in June!

Flyers fans who think they need to be traded now either A) Want to be entertained (ok, same.) and/or B) Think Risto + Laughton aren't good and their value won't last. Again, those fans aren't following the plot. Laughton has had value for years and Risto has reinvented himself as a desirable RHD.

Also, I think you're right. I'm sure they're not listening to the half dozen loudest voices on X who still think Tanking is in vogue in the NHL. (It's not.) Those voices just aren't following the plot of this re-build and we'd all be wise to tune them out.

Trading a 30+ y/o player who the last GM overpaid is not some radical tanking move, it's just normal business when you know your contention window isn't here yet.

Totally. I think it's the impatience that's at issue. Trading a player with term who is useful in the here and now in the interest of tanking results for a better pick. That's the subtext behind the impatience.

I appreciated @charlieoconn.bsky.social on postgame last night pushing back on that crowd who lamented that PIT will get the 1st overall pick. WE BEAT OUR BIGGEST RIVAL 6-1! ENJOY SOMETHING. I think journalism in general is at an inflection point where journalists need to push back on those voices.

Ya, but it's the same portion of the fanbase that said they'd be patient enough to endure a full teardown rebuild. Yet they don't have the patience wait another 4 months to trade Ristolainen when the return is better. I want them to contend to, and I think they're closer than that crowd does.
