I thought Jakob Pelletier was supposed to be at least energetic and spunky, even when he's not scoring. Instead he's been barely noticeable since the trade. No shots or shot attempts in nearly 7 minutes so far today

Wonder how panicked the league/networks are considering the Rangers, Flyers, Bruins, Penguins, Red Wings, Sabres, Blackhawks and Blues may all miss the playoffs. That's a lot of major US hockey markets

“As each game has gone by, it’s gotten worse.” If Saturday was any indication - a bad loss to a bad team - it could be a dark final month and a half. www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Flyers dreadful in first game post-trade deadline: ‘It’s going the wrong direction’ 🔗 www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Not really a hot take here but Rocky Thompson's job has to be hanging by a thread. Strange personnel decisions on the power play all season long and no sustained success at any time over nearly three full seasons.

The Scott Laughton trade feels a little like a turning point in the Flyers' rebuild. This trade was different from all the others Danny Briere has made so far. More ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Flyers understand risk in trading Laughton — ‘It’s a little scary’ — but it had to be done My story on today's "emotional" trade, including what Daniel Briere revealed in his presser ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Philadelphia Flyers trade deadline report card: Grading Daniel Briere’s moves 🔗 www.nytimes.com/athletic/617...

Quick blog on Scott Laughton: nytimes.com/athletic/liv...

Sean Couturier admitted that some "distractions" might be hurting the Flyers lately. Two thoughts: No, not a great excuse, which I'm sure Couturier realizes. But also -- how will they look/react if they actually do trade a guy like Scott Laughton?

Laughton and RIstolainen both on the ice for warmups. They're playing tonight

One little non-deadline tidbit: The Flyers have had talks with Cam York on a contract extension. Heated up around the 20-game mark (mid-November) but cooled off, and obviously nothing done yet. Would guess the most likely scenario is an off-season extension.

For Flyers’ Scott Laughton, ‘it’s hard not to think about’ Friday’s NHL trade deadline www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Scott Laughton: "With all the rumors and stuff I think it feels maybe a little bit more real this year. … Whatever happens, happens. It might not happen, and it may happen. So, it’s hard."

Same lines and Ersson back in net tonight per Torts. No plans on holding anyone out for trade reasons.

What I’m hearing about Flyers’ Scott Laughton, Rasmus Ristolainen with trade deadline nearing 🔗

Flyers struggle to build momentum in ‘lethargic’ start to seven-game homestand 🔗 www.nytimes.com/athletic/617...

Travis Konecny, now with just one goal in his last 15 games: “You can probably assume how I feel. Pretty frustrated.”

In the first period, the Flames and Flyers combined for four goals in 2:14 -- the fastest four goals in a game this season

Scott Laughton, Bobby Brink and Erik Johnson were only skaters on the ice for the optional this morning. And yes, Laughton is playing tonight

Can the Flyers make a run, as coach John Tortorella hopes? It's going to be tough considering where they are in the standings. But they're playing well, with some key facets of their game trending in the right direction. 🔗 www.nytimes.com/athletic/617...

Could improving Flyers make it back into the NHL playoff race? (Spoiler alert: probably not. But maybe?) 🔗 www.nytimes.com/athletic/617...

ICYMI over the weekend: Why a quiet trade deadline for the Flyers wouldn't be anything to get overly upset about www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

Did the break help the Flyers, in particular, because of their style of play? Cam York: “Definitely. It’s a taxing way to play. Blocking shots, guys forechecking hard. D, we have to gap up a lot. Energy is a big thing for us. Feel good right now, just want to keep it going.”

People upset with Danny Briere's patience should take a look about 90 minutes north (via Amtrak) to his former teammate, to see what too many reckless transactions can do to a club

Scott Laughton admitted that viral photo Friday night was "trolling." He and Rasmus Ristolainen, also in trade speculation lately, may end up surviving the deadline. And if they do, no one should be surprised or alarmed by it. Column ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

Candidate for Flyers' best win of the season. Now 4-0-1 in last five, and after the break really just one stretch of bad hockey against the Pens on Thursday. Fedotov's best game to date, easy. Starting to wonder...was that Calgary trade partially addition by subtraction?

If the Flyers have a quiet trade deadline, don’t be surprised. And, no, it wouldn't throw the rebuild off track, either. My column ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

Torts to @WPGMurat on the Laughton photo: "I thought it was great. I saw it late last night. I’m sure Danny and Jonesy got a lot of phone calls when that thing came out, from you knuckleheads buying into it. ... I thought it was fantastic. That’s hockey right there."

This may be out there already but I am told there's "nothing imminent" when it comes to a potential Scott Laughton trade. Would imagine that means he's in the lineup tonight.

It was a short one, but Matvei Michkov has been named as the NHL rookie of the month for February. Second time he has won, including October. 5 goals and 10 points in 7 games for Michkov.

Frost/Farabee: Combined for 4 points in 16 games with the Flames Kuzmenko/Pelletier: Combined for 4 points in 7 games with the Flyers

Good news on Garnet Hathaway. Flyers have been told he is OK and all tests came back negative. Not sure when he'll play again but sounds like the worst was avoided.

One other note: sounds as if there is no supplemental discipline coming for Pens' Boko Imama. League views it same as refs -- a minor penalty with an unfortunate result when Hathaway's head hit the ice.

Trade deadline-related content this week, ICYMI: Latest on Risto/Kuzmenko: www.nytimes.com/athletic/616... My read on Laughton, and updates on Luchanko's possible return and why Kolosov went home over the 4 Nations break: www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

What I’m hearing about the Flyers: Laughton trade talk, Luchanko’s return and more www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

"He's the most improved player since I started here. Size, righty, escapes (pressure), uses his legs.” Torts was signing Ristolainen's praises Wednesday, while assistant Brad Shaw fears a small defense corps. The defenseman may survive the deadline. www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

“If you trade him on Friday, then on Saturday, you say, 'Shit, I need a big, right-handed defenseman.’" On the increasing likelihood (but not a certainty) that the Flyers end up retaining Rasmus Ristolainen: www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

I'm told that the Flyers haven't gotten many calls on defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Fewer than they expected. There is a decent chance now he sticks around post-deadline. Things can change quickly. But that's where it stands at the moment.

Re-energized Noah Cates, confident Travis Sanheim helping Flyers surge out of break My story after the Flyers' second straight dominant win ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/616...

And, I also asked Mike Sullivan this morning about coaching with Torts at the 4 Nations:

Sidney Crosby on playing with Travis Sanheim at 4 Nations: "Obviously, playing against him you understand that he’s a big body and has got a good stick. But just the way he joins the play, the way he skates...
