I have a policy of always having Zoom available for class (all of our classrooms have a webcam). Students just need to email me before class and I’ll turn it on. It’s Day 2 and I just heard from a student who tested positive for COVID.

I do the exact same thing and I'm surprised more professors don't. To me it's win-win: students don't feel like they have to come to class or miss the material, I don't have to deal with a classroom turning into the final scene from Masque of the Red Death
I record instead. They don’t need a reason to ask for the recording, but it’s not available until after class. This works MUCH better for me than trying to do live zoom, and it accomplishes the same goal.
